Match Report - Vikings Cricket Club
Captain leads by example as CCC1 complete a convincing win over CSU
Vignesh Palnaviel
6/12/05
The day started on a sombre note with CCC1 elevenless at the twelth hour at the start of the game. There was confusion everywhere with people in the 11 not turning up and some missing directions to the ground. The weather not helping either being muggy, sticky and humid. Luckily for CCC1 Murali turned up to make the 11 and sunny after going around temple downtown made it just in time for the start. Ani leading the team in Gautam's absence won the toss and surprise surprise elected to bowl first. Kiran lined up to open the bowling with Patrick with the successful CSU openers who shared a 200 run partership in the previous game rearing to have a go at CCC1. Kiran started off with a tight over with patrick providing the ideal foil of line and length. CCC1 got their first breakthrough courtesy a runout when pratik the century maker in the previous game was run out by kiran who smartly overran the batsman to the stumps. Minutes later patrick produced a gem of a outswinger and sunny did the rest at second slip sending back Ram the CSU captain. Having troubled the batsman with his variation patrick bowled out his 7 overs for a miserly 10 runs with 4 maidens, remarkable figures considering he is bowling for the first time this season. CSU batsman were content in playing out the overs rather than risk a wicket. At the drinks break they were 46/2. Prashant was brought into the attack as first change followed by vignesh. The CSU batsman found it very difficult to get prashant away as he moved the ball and extracted good bounce from the wicket. The pressure was eased a bit as vigneshs first 2 overs cost him 14 but the runrate dried up when murali and vignesh got their act together giving away 8 runs in 5 overs. Sensing a wkt Ani brought Kaushal to bowl and he was immediately rewarded with a wkt as the intented slog went straight into the hands of short midwicket. From here on it was a real struggle for CSU as JP grabbed three wkts in an many overs to put the skids on the scoring. The last wkt swung their bats around and scored 20-25 crucial runs giving them a score of 146. Prashant who was impressive bagged 4wkts with JP taking 3 wkts.

Having got to score 147 for a win RaviN and Prashant went out to open. RaviN at once greeted the opening bowlers with his monsterous pull fetching him three boundaries. Prashant on the other hand was disturbing the bowlers line by moving away and making room to play his shots, his lofted ondrive of a slow ball stood out. The opening partnership put on 42runs in 5 overs before prashant holed out in the deep. Sunny walked out in his new role as number three and looked comfortably at ease picking up singles (not girls). RaviN who probably missed a lot trying to drive on the offside went after a wide ball to present a easy catch to the keeper. Ani who batted at 4 got into the act by picking up a six and a 4 when the new bowler was brought in. At the end of 10 overs CCC1 was 70/2wkts. Sunny who looked composed till then attempted to go over the top and gave a easy to midoff, patrick replaced sunny and looked rusty right from the start. He soon departed caught at gully. The score at this stage was 77/4wkts. Vignesh joined Ani and both the batsman started to milk the bowling by playing staright and taking the odd boundary. Ani who was in full flow struck telling blows to the long on and midwkt fences with consummate ease. The pair put on 34 runs before vigneshs attempted pull balloned up for an easy catch he departed for 17. Needing a further 35 runs to win ANI started to open out with a couple of fours. RaviP who came in at the fall of vignesh could not open his account as he was caught behind. JP quelled any fears by seeing of the target with Ani who scored 59* and JP finished with 6*. CCC1 scored the required 147 runs in 22 overs giving them a healthy runrate to go with the 110 run victory against shihab. All is set for a fascinating third game at keeruish park with hashlington.

Ani for his 59* was declared the MOM with prashant and JP standing out for CCC1. Still batting needs a bit of fine tuning with Patrick and RaviP looking rusty. Also a cry to the CCC1 team members to do their best to play the June26th game against COBCA the one team that we need to watch out for and a must win if we are to qualify for the quater finals without taking the prequarters route.
